Can you give my readers an insight into who Basheerah Ahmad is, and your journey to where you are now?
I’m a woman of God that pursues her purpose and passion no matter what. Growing up in Oklahoma City, OK, I didn’t see anyone who reflected what I wanted for her life, so I made the decision to forge my own path. While serving as an Artistic Director for Inner City Dance in Oklahoma, I noticed that the students were talented but were unhealthy. It was at that very point in my life that I began to dedicate my career to the world of obesity and injury prevention. In 2001, I decided to take my love for performing and fitness to another level by moving to Los Angeles, CA. After years of hard work and preparation, I’m considered one of the fastest rising Fitness Experts in the industry.
Has fitness always been a passion for you?
Physical fitness has always been a passion of mine, but not always in the way I use it now. I began formal Ballet training at the age of 6, and from that point on I was hooked on the world of dancing. As a dancer, I was very mindful of my weight and muscle tone, but still struggled with eating the right foods for my body type. After an ankle injury I realized that I needed to learn how to make my body work efficiently even when I wasn’t dancing. I began taking nutrition, weight training, anatomy, and reading about kinesiology, and the rest is history. Not only did I help to rehabilitate myself from my injury, but I also began helping other dancers with nutrition, and proper body alignment. The world of personal training and group exercise opened up for me soon after.
How did you get your start working with celebrities such as Carrie Underwood, Vivica A. Fox, Steve Harvey, Jordin Sparks, and more?
I became a celebrity fitness expert after I was referred to work with Steve Harvey and Vivica Fox. Also a great friend of mine, Cheryl Debrosse (former Executive Manger with 19 Entertainment and current manger of Chante Moore) introduced me to the managers of Jordin Sparks, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia, Lauren Alaina, and Carrie Underwood. Fortunately for me, they all liked me and felt that I was the best person to work with their clients.
You have an affirmations book “Love Yourself Enough To Be Healthy,” which I love! What result/outcome should people expect from reading your book?
The only outcome that I would like people to gain from my book, “Love yourself enough to be healthy” is to consider making themselves a priority as they embark or continue on the road to healthier living.
In your book you made an interesting point about tying health back to its original source, the Spirit. Tell me more about that.
The Spirit, or as some would say the Soul, is the foundation of our existence. It is who we truly are. We cannot even begin to get completely healthy until the Spirit is healthy. Our mind, body, and Spirit need to receive constant nourishment.
In your book you mentioned healthy eating and consistent exercise are wonderful catalysts in obtaining long-term health, but they are just pieces of the entire puzzle. From your perspective what are the missing pieces to the puzzle?
You have to nourish all areas of your life (relationships, spiritual, career, finance etc.) in order to live a happy, peaceful and balanced life. Healthy eating and exercising might keep you in shape physically but it’s not the only factors that contribute to healthy living.
You have a new DVD out called 360 Transformation that consists of 3 minute intervals, can you explain how the program works?
The new DVD features 2 great workouts. One of them is an interval style high-paced workout called 3 Minute Rounds, and the other is a fat blasting routine that focuses on the Butt and Stomach and is called Buns & Bellies. They are both suitable for anyone who is already engaged in some type of exercise routine. The best results will occur if people also purchase my 4321 Nutrition Plan, to keep their eating on track as they exercise.
